Poignant Mission Patch Design
The moon landing was a major victory for the United States during the heart of the Cold War. That makes the mission patch image of an eagle landing on the lunar surface especially poignant, as it represented a triumph not just for the human race but also for the United States. The earth is visible in the background, nearly 240,000 miles away. Florida, home of the Kennedy Space Center from which the mission launched, is at the center. The mission's name, "APOLLO 11," is inscribed at the top.
Essential information about the mission is spread throughout the reverse. At the center are key dates for the mission: "LAUNCHED JULY 16, 1969," "LANDED JULY 20, 1969," and "RETURNED JULY 24, 1969." Below them are the anniversary dates, "1969-2019." The names of the men who were aboard the mission, "ARMSTRONG - COLLINS - ALDRIN," are inscribed along the rim, and the words "50TH ANNIVERSARY" are included just inside them.
