There were also three initial prototypes made of the Ares I-X medallion. The prototype differences:
On the front color side, the blue background is noticeably lighter than the production pieces. Instead of only the flown metal "chip" being embedded in epoxy (as is the case on the production pieces), this entire side is covered in epoxy. There is no epoxy on the front color side of the prototypes and production pieces.
